Secondary school is the next stage in a child’s educational journey. They will be in bigger classrooms and will be learning a variety of new subjects from multiple teachers. After the familiar surroundings of primary school, the move to secondary school will be both an exciting and perhaps daunting time for both parent and child.

To help students adjust, St Mary MacKillop College staff work together with local primary schools to ease students through the transition period.

In Term 2,  all Grade 6 students from local primary schools are invited to attend a ‘Transition Day’ to experience some of the core and elective subjects offered in Year 7 at St Mary MacKillop College. In Term 3, a second Transition Day will be held for all students that have applied for enrolment in Year 7 2026.  Students from local primary schools are invited to attend our annual musical performance in August. In Term 4, students enrolled in Year 7 2026  will attend our Orientation Day, which provides students with a further opportunity to become familiar with the layout of the College and develop positive relationships with their new classmates and teachers.

Parents of prospective Year 7 students will also have the opportunity to visit the College and meet some of our teachers and students during the Open Day and Parent Information Evening on Wednesday 28th May. College tours are also held throughout the year, and may be organised by contacting the Transition Coordinator, Mr Damien Hirst.

Designed to assist your child to settle quickly into secondary school life, our Transition program extends students’ knowledge of secondary school, builds resilience, promotes their personal confidence and generally helps students to have a positive move to secondary school.
